The existence of the communist party of Kampuchea was kept secret for 17 years until's last month. The following article, reprinted in full from Hsinhua, the Chinese new agency, discusses the history of the party. A grand meeting attended by more than 10,000 people was held in Phnom Penh, Capital of Democratic Kampuchea on September 27 to warmly celebrate the 17th anniversary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK). At the meeting, Pol Pot, secretary of the CPK central committee, delivered an important speech formally announcing the party's existence to the country and the world.
