Additional Information: (dated 2 October 2009)
Separation from family: In 1975, my family lived in Koh Prak Village, Phoum Thom Commune, Kien Svay District, Kandal Province. In 1976, the unit chief, Ta Ngoy, assigned me to work in a mobile unit and I was not allowed to visit my wife or my children at all. Not until a year later did the Khmer Rouge give me permission to have a one-day home-visit. Afterward, I had to walk back to the worksite at Sre Ampil Village, Sdao Commune, Kien Svay District, ten kilometers away from my home. There were approximately 60 workers at this site, of which 28 were female. The mobile unit chief was named Ta Khorn. My group was responsible for overseeing the rice fields, digging canals and building dikes. We had to work from 7 a.m. until 12 pm, with no breakfast. For lunch, we had watery gruel. The food ration was insufficient. Then we continued to work from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.. When someone’s wife or child was sick, Angkar told them that “there is no need to visit because you are not a doctor. Angkar has doctors to take care of them. Within a year, Angkar distributed a set of clothing to everyone. Life under the Khmer Rouge regime was miserable because I was separated from my family and subjected to hard labor every day. If we were not conscientious about our work, Angkar would take notice and send us to be re-educated or executed. I lived in a mobile unit in which I was separated from my family. We were not able to reunite and live together in the village until 1979. |
