Unless China's leaders are afflicted with a Nixonian desire to "punish" Vietnam for the sake of it, the aim of their invasion was to force Vietnamese troops out of Kampuchea. They must have seen those troops as rapidly demolising any chanes of the return to power of their ally Pol Pot, ousted on 7 January.
