The soiree was the social event of the season in Peking-and a long way from the bloody battlefields of Cambodia. In a luxurious villa in the old French quarter, guests feasted on skewered beef and fried rice, washed down with champagne. Members of the Peking Symphony, one of whom had practiced for days with castanets provided the rumbas and sambas for the dancing diplomats- and Chinese Foreign Minister Huang Hua. From time to time, the host crooned his own compositions. Three months after his release from house arrest in Phnom Penh, Prince Norodom Sihanouk marked the Cambodian New Year last week with an old-fashioned ball.
