|
At an open-air hospital just inside Thailand, a 75-years-old woman weeps for her lost daughter. She says "they" told her to leave Camodia the day before, but she does not know who "they" are. Ten miles away, a feverish young mother collapses as she staggers toward a pesthole of a refugee camp; her skeletal 6-year-old duaghter tries in vain to pick her up while other starving refugees stream past unseeing. "They are lethargic, apathetic, as though they were shellshocked," says Dr. Geoffrey Atkinson, a British relief worker. "They seem to want to lie down and lie."
