Summary / Abstract :
Having adopted a cautions position in Southeast Asia for more than three years, the United States appears to have welland truly shaken off its post-Vietnam war diffidence in the region. With the turmoil in Indochina posing a growing threat to the region's security and stability, the US has adopted a new, more assertive role in bolstering the five noncommunist Asean countries, and alleviating the hardships caused by the flood of refugees from their communist neighbours. It is a role which matches Washington's burgeoning relationship with China, and its continuing solidarity with Japan and South Korea.
