18 months after their blitzkrieg aimed at swallowing up Kampuchea at one go, the Vietnamese have got bogged down. Democratic Kampuchea and the Patriotic and Democratic Front of Great National Union are like a steel stake driven in Le Duan's throat. The latter, after failiing in the military field, can do nothing to get itself out of the impasse but to carry out diplomatic manoeuvres. Hanoi, with the Soviet blessing, is resorting both to the smile and big stick diplomacy, and to deceptive pledges.
