Summary / Abstract :

The Vietnamese have become more dependent on the Soviet Union than is healthy for an independent power. But an understanding of their view of the world must take into account Vietnam's historic fears of China, its historic rivalry with Thailand, its more recents wars with France and the United States, and the threats it encountered only a few years ago from a pro-chinese Cambodia.
