On 2 January 1978, Chhun, the deputy chief of regiment in Kandal Stung Mobile Unit, came to my village, Kanduy Toek, located in Chamkar Khsach Commune of Kandal Stung District, to arrest me on the accusation of being a CIA agent. Later, Chhun ordered a battalion and a company to capture me and detain me in Sang Tonle Bati Prison. Soon after my arrival in Sang Prison, the Khmer Rouge soldiers tied my hands behind my back, and kicked and shackled my legs before sending me to my cell. I was detained in Room 2 for three months, and then transferred to Room 3. Room 1 was utilized as a “dark prison [Kuk Ngor Ngit], while Room 2 was used as a single cell and Room 3 for a mass cell of up to 40 inmates. During my detention in Room 3, the Khmer Rouge ordered me to work in the rice fields, making manure. One morning while I was threshing rice at the north end of the rice field near the wall of Sang Prison, a Khmer Rouge soldier named Tam called me, but unfortunately I didn’t hear his call. Tam was so furious that he suddenly took a piece of wood and hit me on my back, causing me to lose consciousness for about half an hour. Immediately upon gaining consciousness, I rushed to work again. A month later, I was transferred to the manure-making group with Chhoeun as my group leader. During the time I worked with Chhoeun, he ordered me to act as a horse, transporting him back and forth between the prison and the workplace, four times a day. The manure worksite was approximately one kilometer away from the prison site. At the end of 1978, while I was standing inside the cell of Room 3, suddenly Each, a Khmer Rouge soldier, violently twisted my ear with his hand. Three days later, my ear began bleeding and continued bleeding for around two weeks. Since then, I have been deaf in that ear. In 1979, at one o’clock in the morning, two Khmer Rouge soldiers named Un and Nang came in and kicked us for no reason. My father, Yim Chakk, had been incarcerated in Sang Prison after 1975 and died in the prison before I was captured and detained there. In 1977, my mother, Mao Mi, was also arrested by the Khmer Rouge and detained in Sang Prison for no reason. My mother and I managed to escape the deathly place on 7 January 1979. |
