When a newspaper uses precious frontpage space as The New York Times did on Monday to expose a lie in its own columns, it is trying to do much more than confess a procedural lapse. The point is to reaffirm a compact with the reader that is printed has been honestty gathered and labeled that any credible challenge will be rigorously examined and that serious error will get promt and conspicuous notice.
