Summary / Abstract :

The old man sits on the post office steps, a bathroom scale on the sidewalk beside him. The little scale, a vintage model, is his livelihood, and he has covered all but its dial with a piece of used plastic to protect this most valuable possession from the mud of a drizzle day.
