Hay said that she first worked as militiamen of village. Then she was sent to Phnom Penh to fight and work in Kampong Som such as carrying rice from Chinese ship. Later she left there for Phnom Penh to cook rice at hospital. 4 or 5 months after the Khmer Rouge collapsed, Voan returned home.
