He kept a clear conscience up until the end but then great villains and psychopaths generally do. No one given to second thoughts should ever contemplate genocide. Even if Pol Pot's attempt to remake Cambodian society by mass murder turned out badly and he ended his days a prisoner of his fomer colleagues, themselves a tiny band hiding in a remote corner of the jungle, remorse would be out of the question.
