Le 18 mars, l'opinion internationale fort surprise apprend qu'un certain Lon Nol , général de son état a renversé le prince Norodom Sihanouk qui semblait pourtant terir fermement le pouvoir dains son pays.Le mois suivant, les troupes américaines en profitent pour envahir le Cambodge qui avait jusque-la été tenu à l'écart de la guerre de destruction qui faisait rage dans l'Etat voisin.
