Summary / Abstract :

Kampuchea provided an unlikely setting for the coming to power of socialist revolutionaries and for their successful consolidation of power. On the one hand , internal social conditions were unfavourable. Economic and social changes within Khmer Society following integration into world markets had proceeded slowly and peacefully, being cushioned by the availability of arable land and the existence of agricultural surpluses.
