Mai៌s wife៌s name is Lun An. He has two sons and one daughter.
Mai was born in Koh Ker village. His father៌s name is Dy Min and his mother៌s is Ma Yean. Mai has six bothers and one sister. He is the eldest. Mai went to school just three months before volunteering to join the KR movement. Mai served as a soldier in company 322, Battalion 338. His unit was in Char-Kantuot near Preah Vihear temple. Between 1975 and 76, Mai៌s duty was to protect the border and grow rice to support the unit.
In 1977, Mai was sent back to a mobile brigade unit in Srayang commune when many cadres in his unit were accused of betraying the party and being involved with CIA networking. At that time Chea was the chief of Koulen district. Ta Hang was the head of the region 103. After Chea, Hang, and other cadres were arrested, Than (who came from Southwest Zone) was promoted to be the chief of Koulen district. Khim was the chief of the Region Preah Vihear (103).
Mai was forced to clean farm land and grow bananas, potatoes, and melons. Ta Nam was the chief of the Mobile brigade unit in Srayang. One day a person named Lum committed a moral offense with a lady; Ta Nam killed him. Mai was forced to marry to his wife in 1978.
When the KR collapsed in 1979, Mai returned to live with his family in Koh Ker village and work in the rice fields. In 1983, the village was abandoned because of war between the KR and Vietnamese. Some villagers followed the Vietnamese to live in Trapeang Svay, Svay Leu district, Siem Reap Province and others followed the KR and Ta Mok to live at Dangrek Mountain (Preah Pralay and AnlongVeng areas).
In 1984 some villagers returned to the village but abandoned it again in 1986 when the KR and Vietnamese often fought in the village. The villagers escaped to live along the rivers or in the forest. In 2004 most of the villagers returned and lived permanently in the village.
