Two Chinese merchant vessels had been spoted in the area and were presumed to be delivering or attempting to deliver military supplies to the Cambodian force of Pol Pot's regime on shore. Such activity is likely to be rendered difficult however, reported by capture of Kong Island by Vietnamese troop.
