Lon Nol, the former Cambodian president who took power in a coup in 1970 and was overthrown by the communist Khmer Rouge regime in 1975, has died in southern California. He was aged 72. He replaced the 1100 year old Cambodian monarchy under Norodom Sihanouk and formed the first Khmer Republic.
