Mao Tse- Tung was virtually insane during the last 19 years of his life, according to the Chinese communist Party general secretary, Zhao ziyang, the man Deng Xiaoping has chosen to steer China into the twenty- first century. Zhao also quoted the 83 year- old Deng as declaring the was stepping down from the Politburo before mind becomes confused, a clear reference to Mao's senility.
