China backs the Marxist Khmer Rouge, the military backbone of a tripartite UN-Recognized guerrilla coalition fighting Cambodia's Hanoi-Installed government forces. The KR, held responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands during a reign of terror from 1975 and 1979, were ousted from power in Cambodia when Vietnam invaded that country and installed a client regime in Phnom Penh.
