I am Sau Phorn, 49 years old, currently living in Krapeu Trom Village, Roluos Commune, Kandal Stung District, Kandal Province.

In 1976, my mother was evacuated to Battambang Province, despite the fact that she was seriously ill at that time. By the time the evacuees arrived in Mong Russey District, my mother had already died on the truck because no one was attending to her illness. Her body was then thrown away and covered with leaves. I learned these facts from a lady named Chann Ray. She currently lives in Krapeu Trom Village, Roluos Commune, Kandal Stung District, Kandal Province.

Ten days after our arrival, my father died of hunger (in Prey Toting Cooperative). The loss of my mom also contributed to his poor condition. The cooperative chief, Ngaol, ordered the reduced rations which led to his starvation. The female cooperative chief, Roeun, was the distributor of food rations to each unit. The ration consisted of just one can of rice for thirty people, a meager amount which resulted in the deaths of approximately 20-30 people every day in the cooperative. After the death of my parents, seven of my siblings, namely Hong (female), Vit (male), Um (M), Sun (F), Huy (F), Veang (M), and Che (M,) died one after the other of hunger.

I learned this story about my parents and siblings from a lady named Chann Ray, who lived in the same cooperative with them at Prey Toting. I don’t know the reason for the starvation. I personally think that the Prey Toting Cooperative Chief was the responsible person.
