Summary / Abstract :

We may agree with Thailand over the possibility of former Kampuchea head of state Prince Sihanouk having a constructive role to play in resolving the Kampuchean conflict,but we must not be seen to be attempting in any way to substitute a more palatable Kampuchean leader for the blood stained reputation of Pol Pot. Not only has Malaysia's position been astudiously non-aligned one, but any move that may be interpreted as a weakening of our support for the Khmer Rouge will play in to the hands of the Vietnamese. They have consitenty chosen to main terpret Asean's support of democratic Kampuchea and identified it with an endorment of the artrocities perpetrated during the pol pot regime.
