This reflects the Chinese interest in broadening their options in Cambodia, in developing relations with the in-country groups with as little detriment as possible to the relationship with Sihanouk. It would appear that during Khieu Samphan's visit the Chinese did all they could to encourage solidarity between the Cambodian groups and to consolidate Sihanouk's standing.
