Sun Bann Than used to study at Beng Keng Kong high school, Phnom Penh, and stayed with his neighbour at De Po market. During Pchum Ben in 1972, he travelled to visit his home at Prey Puoch, Ang Snuol destrict. Then he was driven to a place near wat Samdach Chuon Nat by enemies. He was forced to join them (if he doesn't agree, he will be killed), so he joined them whose chief was Ta Yang. Sun Vann Than was a food cerrer from Sala Kruoh came near Tmat Porng region. He defected to the government because of oppression.
ឈ្មោះ ស៊ុន វ៉ាន់ថនធ្លាប់បានរៀននៅវិទ្យាល័យបឹងកេងកងក្រុង ភំ្នពេញ ហើយស្នាក់នៅជាមួយអ្នកស្រុកជាមួយគ្នាម្នាក់នៅផ្សារ ដេប៉ូ។ នៅឆ្នាំ១៩៧២ ពេលបុណ្យភ្ជុំបិណ្យ ស៊ុន វ៉ាន់ថន បានធ្វើ ដំណើរទៅលេងផ្ទះនៅព្រៃពួចស្រុកអង្គស្នួល។ ពេលនោះត្រូវបាន ខ្មាំងកៀរយកទៅកន្លែងរបស់វាក្បែរវត្ដសមេ្ដចជួន ណាត។ នៅពេល នោះវាបានបង្ខំ ស៊ុន វ៉ាន់ថន ឱ្យចូលបំរើពួកវា តែបើមិនព្រមបំរើ ពួកវាទេ វានឹងសម្លាប់ចោល។ ពេលនោះ ស៊ុន វ៉ាន់ថន ក៏ចូលបំរើ ពួកវាដែលមានមេឈ្មោះ តា យ៉ាង។ ស៊ុន វ៉ាន់ថន មានតួនាទីជា អ្នកនាំស្បៀងពីសាលាគ្រោះទៅជិតតំបន់ត្មាតពង។ មូលហេតុដែលនាំឱ្យឈ្មោះនេះចូលមកសារភាព ដោយសារទ្រាំនិងការគាបសង្កត់របស់ ពួកវាមិនបាន។
