A thousand years ago, Cambodia 's territory extend not only over the modern Kingdom but also over most of what is now South Vietnam on the East and South and over lower Thailand, as far as the Malay peneinsula, on the West. Thai and Vietnamese encroachments gradually reduced the Kingdom 's dimensions and it is probable that, but for a intervention of the French in 19th Century.
