Summary / Abstract :
|
MAPPING THE KILLING FILEDS OF CAMBODIA1999 '
"- The Number-- Quantifying Crimes Against Humanity in Cambodia" Moreover, once all the mapping data has finally been compiled, then the Documentation Center will face the final and perhaps most difficult phase of the work, forensic examination of a selected sample of the mass grave sites. This will be necessary to add additional scientific confirmation concerning the identity and causes of death of the victims in these graves, in order to augment the evidence already collected through physical inspection of the sites by the mapping teams, the testimony of local witnesses, and the wealth of information discovered in the archives of the Khmer Rouge secret police, the Santebal. The dedicated personnel hwho have contributed to the Documentation Center's mass grave mapping project have helped to ensure that the truth about the magnitude of Khmer Rouge evil can be known to Cambodians and to the world. They have also helped to ensure that those who attempt to deny the truth about the Khmer Rouge genocide will not prevail in civilized debate. We are moving from the day when the Cambodian people feared the Khmer Rouge, to a new time when the Khmer Rouge have excellent reason to fear that if they are ever brought to justice for these gigantic crimes, the evidence to secure their convictions will be plentiful. For all who would deny that the Khmer Rouge ruthlessly killed innocent Cambodians on a massive scale, the evidence unearthed by the Documentation Center of incontrovertible rebuttal Cambodia through their digging in the Killing Fields provides a devastating and incontrovertible rebuttal. - Mapping Project 1999: Siem Reap Province. Wat Tbeng is an execution site at which there is one large mass grave and five or six smaller pits located in southern part of the temple. Presently the execution sites are no longer visible to the naked eye. Approximately thirty to forty families were Killed there, totaling 150 to 20 people. After the interview with the second witness in Tbeng village, Tbeng commune, the team prepared to proceed to Skun village, Tbong commune. However, because Skun village is quite distant form Wat Tbeng, and because the road conditions were unfavorable, the team elected not to visit that village at this time. Even though the visit to this village had to be canceled, the team gained some information on killings committed in Skun village from the Tbeng commune chief. He had told the team, in Skun village, there is an execution site located on a small hill near Span Sre Praing, in the western part of the village. During the region of the Khmer Rouge there (1973-1979), some people were evacuated from Siem Reap province town to this village and killed at this location. The number of families execution in Skun village is estimated at ten to fifteen, totaling some 80 to 150 people. In Varin District, there are many execution sites. Even though the team was unable to visit all Commune, everything thy saw in Svay Sar commune clearly reflected the fact that the Khmer Rouge slaughtered people barbarously here. The witness located there all had precise knowledge of events during the Khmer Rouge period. After visiting the sites and interview the witnesses, the team concluded that between 1970 and 1979, the districts in this area were controlled by the Khmer Rouge. However, this control was contested by Lon Nol=s forces from 1970 to 1975. The serious killing by the Khmer Rouge occurred between 1975 and 1979, and was evidently worst between 1977 and 1979. In the three district of Siem Reap province the team was able to visit, there were many execution sites. The team regretted that time did not allow them to visit all the communes. The roads were also in bad condition, meaning travel in the rain was not a good idea, especially in the case where the sites the team wished to visit were far from the provincial town. |
