On March 18, 1970, Yan served in Khmer communist movement as a combatant in Svay Rieng district. In 1972, he was a soldier in the spy unit K-9, which was located in kok Sramar district, region 23, Svay Rieng province. Afterwards, he was appointed as the chief of the unit B-1.
ឈ្មោះ យ៉ាន បានចូលបម្រើចលនាខ្មែរកុម្មុយនីស្ដនៅថ្ងៃទី១៨ ខែមីនា ឆ្នាំ១៩៧០, ជាយុទ្ធជនក្នុងអង្គភាពទ័ពស្រុកស្វាយរៀង។ នៅឆ្នាំ១៩៧២ ជាយុទ្ធជនក្នុងអង្គភាពស៊ើបការណ៍គ-៩ ដែលមានទីតាំងនៅ ក្នុងស្រុកកោកស្រមរ ខេត្ដស្វាយរៀង តំបន់២៣។ ហើយក្រោយមកត្រូវបានគេតែងតាំងអោយក្លាយទៅជាប្រធានបេ-១។
