Thaong Bun alias Ma Ren, had served the Khmer Viet Cong in 1970. He was a chief of Group B-2 in Independent Unit, Kamchay Mie district, Region 20 and Zone 203. This Independent Unit comprised 500 soldiers, and 400 guns as following: B-40 guns CKC guns, AK-47 guns, AT guns, and M-60 guns.
On February 15, 1973, this person defected the National Army in Prey Veng war operation sub-region. ថោង ប៊ុន ហៅ ម៉ារិន បានចូលបម្រើខ្មែរយៀកកុងកាលពីឆ្នាំ១៩៧០ ដោយមានឋានះជាប្រធានក្រុម ខ-២ ក្នុងវរៈគ-ឯករាជ្យ ប្រចាំស្រុក កំចាយមារ តំបន់២០ ភូមិភាគ២០៣ ដោយកងវរៈគ-ឯករាជ្យ មានគ្នា៥០០នាក់ មានអាវុធ៤០០ដើម ដូចជា បេ៤០, សេកាសេ, អាកា, អាតេ, អ៊ឹម៦០។ ឈ្មោះនេះបានចុះចូលជាមួយកងទ័ពជាតិ ផ្នែកសឹករងនៅព្រៃវែង កាលពីថ្ងៃទី១៥ ខែធ្នូ ឆ្នាំ១៩៧៣។
