Loss
In 1977, Khmer Rouge soldiers (none of whom I could identify) arrested and took my older sibling to Prey Bralech village, Kampong Thom province. Upon my arrival in Kampong Thom, I was told that my sibling had been detained in a detention center because of an allegation that he was part of the Yuons’ network. Prior to his arrest, he served as a medical staff member. At one point, his chief ordered him to collect and burn rubbish. When two to three thickets of sugarcane were accidentally burned in a fire, he was accused of being a traitor involved with the Yuons’ network, for which purpose he had burned the sugarcane. Since this incident took place, I have not seen him. |

Forced labor
In 1975, after Pol Pot took control throughout the country, I lived in Barortum village, Rungroeung commune, Stung district, Kampong Thom province. At the time, comrade Lao called upon me to join a commune art group in order to entertain people. During the daytime, we worked as usual, but commune leaders ordered me to spend my evenings learning to sing and dance. A year after I joined the art group, Khmer Rouge security police who came from the east zone and whose names I did not know assigned me to work in a mobile work brigade. In the mobile work brigade, comrade Mun, a chief, sent me to build the 30 September dam. I was ordered to carry two cubic meters of soil from four a.m. to eleven a.m., and, after a break, from one p.m. to seven p.m. Six months later, they transferred me to do dry farming on the Tonle Sap bank. I have no idea what the village’s name was. They then sent me to do more dry farming near the 30 September dam. At this time, they ordered us to transplant three Plaun [150 rice seedlings] of rice seedlings per day—five people were assigned to transplant one hectare of rice seedling. |
