Um Sem joined the national army on February-18-1963. He quited the military service and became a taxi draggling motor driver, afterward. In 1970 he returned to the military service and was transfered to Chrey Thom checkpoint. After 4 days at Chrey thom, the national army was attacked by Viet-Cong soldiers and ran off to Koh Thom and Sitbou. Later on, feeling down as to unable to get the rations of his wife and children, he again went to join battalion 65. He was arrested by combatant in battalion 68 while traveling to visit his older brother's house.
អ៊ុំ សែម ចូលបម្រើកងទ័ពជាតិនៅថ្ងៃ១៨-២-១៩៦៣ ហើយក៏ ឈប់មកធាក់រ៉ឹម៉ក់វិញ។ ១៩៧០ចូលធ្វើទាហានម្ដងទៀតមក នៅបុស្ដិជ្រៃធំ។ នៅជ្រៃធំបាន៤ថ្ងៃពួក យៀកកុងចូលវាយទាហានជាតិ បាក់ទ័ពទៅនៅកោះធំរួចមកសិត្បូ។ ក្រោយមកសាម៉ីខ្លួន ក៍រត់ចូល កងវរសេនាតូចលេខ៦៥ មូលហេតុអន់ចិត្ដបញ្ហាបើកលុយ ប្រពន្ធកូនមិនបាន។ សាម៉ីខ្លួនត្រូវបានទាហានកងលេខ៦៨ ចាប់ខ្លួន ពេលមកលេងផ្ទះបង។
