Yos Sapann served in Khmer communist movement since August 1974, as a combattant in unit A-1, B-3, C-1 in Prasotr district. Because he didn't want to serve enemy, he escaped from Khmer communist, and defected at battalion 19, infantry brigade 4 on November 9, 1974. He and his friend Chann Ya brought along one AK-47 and CKC.
យស់ សាប៉ាន់ បានចូលបម្រើខ្មាំងនៅថ្ងៃទី១៩ ខែសីហា ឆ្នាំ១៩៧៤ ដោយមានមុខងារ ជាយុទ្ធជនក្នុងកងឯកភាព ក.១, ខ.៣, គ.១ កងទ័ពស្រុកប្រសូត្រ។ ក្រោយពីចូលបម្រើខ្មាំងជននេះធ្លាប់បានឆ្លង វគ្គរៀនសូត្រផ្នែកវិជ្ជាយុទ្ធសាស្ដ្រជាមួយខ្មែរកុម្មុយនីស្ដ។ ដោយ មានការភ្ញាក់រលឹកទាន់ពេលវេលា មិនចង់រស់នៅជាយុទ្ធជនបម្រើឱ្យខ្មាំង ជននេះបានភៀសខ្លួនចេញពីពួកខ្មែរកុម្មុនីស្ដមកសារភាព ចំពោះមុខកងវរសេនាតូចលេខ១៩ នៃកងពលតូចថ្មើរជើងលេខ៤ នៅថ្ងៃទី៩ ខែវិច្ឆិកា ឆ្នាំ១៩៧៤ ព្រមទាំងបាននាំមកជាមួយនូវ អាវុធអាកា៤៧ មួយដើម និងមិត្ដម្នាក់ឈ្មោះ ចាន់ យ៉ា។
