Starvation
In 1976, one year after the Pol Pot regime came to power, they created a collective dining hall. They then took household equipment, including pans, plates, spoons, and any other household implements, from every home and brought it to the dining hall. At the beginning, they gave us rice to eat. Later on, like other people living in the village at that time, I was supposed to eat gruel. One can of rice with morning glory soup and a little salt and Prahok inside was served for seven people. They only gave us one plate of gruel, which was really watery. If we decanted the gruel, we would get only a handful of rice. The collective dining hall was located in La-ak village, Dareislap commune, Kampong Thom district, Kampong Thom province, also known as Monkol Sna village. One person who took control over the cooperative was Ngin Rieb, a man native to Kun village. I do not know why the collective dining was instituted. I do not know about any other things that occurred under the regime. |
