Indochina project associate Gareth Porter recently returned from a seven-week trip to Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Kampuchea. Based on dozens of interviews with officials, diplomats and other observers in the ASEAN capital, he found the real reason for ASEAN's present posture in Thailand's need for security guarantees from China.
