Prince Sihanouk said that, "When they no longer need me, they will spit me out like a cherry pit." As head of state during the 1960s, he had exile, executed and jailed many of the Khmer rebels. After 5 years of exile in Peking, Sihanouk and his wife made a triumphal return to Phnom Penh.
សមេ្ដច សីហនុ បាននិយាយថា «នៅពេលដែលពួកគេលែងត្រូវការខ្ញុំ ពួកនឹងស្ដោះទឹកមាត់ដាក់ខ្ញុំដូចជានៅរណ្ដៅនរក»។ ជាប្រមុខរដ្ឋក្នុងអំឡុងពេលឆ្នាំ១៩៦០ សីហនុបាននិរទេសខ្លួន បានឃុំឃាំង និងបានជាប់គុករបស់ខ្មែរឧទ្ទាមជាច្រើន។ ក្រោយពីនិរទេសខ្លួន ៥ឆ្នាំក្នុងទីក្រុងប៉េកាំង សីហនុ និង ព្រះមហេសី បានត្រលប់មករាជធានីភ្នំពេញដោយជោគជ័យ។
