For two and a half year after the fall of Phnom Penh, Mak was an agricultural laborer with the Khmer Rouge until he finally escaped into Thailand. Mak was the only known survivor in his family. He last saw his parents, brothers and sisters in late 1972 during a visit home from Phnom Penh.
រយៈពេលពីរឆ្នាំកន្លះ ក្រោយពីការដួលរលំនៅទីក្រុងភ្នំពេញ ម៉ាក់ គឺជា កម្មករផ្នែកកសិកម្មធ្វើការជាមួយនឹងខ្មែរក្រហម រហូតដល់លោកអាចរត់ ភៀសខ្លួនទៅកាន់ប្រទេសថៃបាន។ ម៉ាក់ គឺជាជនដែលរស់រានមានជីវិតតែ ម្នាក់គត់នៅក្នុងគ្រួសាររបស់លោក។ រយៈពេលចុងក្រោយដែលលោក បានជួបឪពុកម្ដាយ បងប្អូនប្រុស និងបងប្អូនស្រីរបស់លោកគឺនៅចុង ឆ្នាំ១៩៧២ ក្នុងអំឡុងពេលក្នុងអំឡុងពេលដែលលោកមកពីទីក្រុងភ្នំពេញ ដើម្បីមកលេងផ្ទះនៅឯស្រុក។
