Before the Vietnamese army swept him from power, Cambodian Prime Minister Pol Pot presided over the systematic slaughter of hundreds of thousands of his own people. As the only significant resistance to Vietnamese domination, Pol Pot's regime continued to be recognized by most nation as the legitimate government.
