During the war against the French, forces were set up by the Khmer and supported by Vietnam. After 1954, the Khmer and Vietnam regrouped in diffrent places. During the 1960s, the US intervention, the Khmer Rouge were very small.
ក្នុងអំឡុងពេលដែលធ្វើសង្គ្រាមប្រឆាំងនឹងបារាំង កងកម្លាំងទ័ពត្រូវបាន បង្កើតឡើងដោយក្រុមខ្មែរក្រហមនិងការជួយជ្រំជ្រែងដោយវៀតណាម។ ក្រោយពីឆ្នាំ១៩៥៤ ក្រុមទ័ពខ្មែរខ្មែរ និងវៀតណាម ត្រូវបានបង្កើត ឡើង ថ្មីៗនៅតាមតំបន់ផេ្សងគ្នា ។ ក្នុងអំឡុងឆ្នាំ១៩៦០ សហរដ្ឋ អាមេរិកបានធើ្វការអន្ដរាគមន៍មកលើខ្មែរ ហើយខ្មែរក្រហមនៅមាន លក្ខណៈស្រួចស្រាលណាស់។
