US government reasoning was both bizarre and Machiavellian: The enemy of my enemy is friend. The Khmer Rouge are clearly Vietnam's enemy. Thus, they became friend. Khmer Rouge allied their forces with two smaller anti-Vietnamese factions, those of Prince Sihanouk and Son Sann.
ការរកហេតុផលរបស់រដ្ឋាភិបាលសហរដ្ឋអាមេរិកគឺទាំងអាក្រក់និងមាន ឧបាយកលច្រើនរាប់រយជំពូកគឺថា «សត្រូវនៃសត្រូវ របស់យើងគឺជាមិត្ដ របស់យើង»។ ពេលនោះខ្មែរក្រហម ក្លាយទៅជាសត្រូវរបស់វៀតណាម យ៉ាង ច្បាសហេតុដូចេ្នះអាមេរិកក៏បានក្លាយទៅជាមិត្ដ។ ខ្មែរក្រហមបានចងមេត្រី ភាពខាងផ្នែកកងកម្លាំងជាមួយក្រុមតូចៗពីរ ទៀតដែលជាបក្សប្រឆាំងនឹង វៀតណាម ក្រោមការដឹកនាំរបស់ព្រះបាទ សីហនុ និង សឺន-សាន ។
