On 23 February 1991, Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, General Sunthorn Khonsomphong, announced the overthrow of the government of Prime Minister General Chatichai Choonhavan, the abolition of the constitution and parliament, the imposition of material law, a ban on political gathering of more than 5 people and a ban on activities by political parties.
