According to numerous refugee reports reaching the South Vietnamese capital, hundreds or thousands of city dwellers had died on the road since the Khmer Rouge ordered them out of Phnom Penh. Refugees had indicated that most of the ethnic Chinese and Vietnamese residents of Cambodia were heading for Saigon.
ផ្អែកទៅតាមរបាយការណ៍នៃចំនួនជនភៀសខ្លួនដែលឈានទៅដល់ក្រុងវៀតណាមភាគខាងត្បូងអ្នករស់នៅក្នុងទីក្រុងជាច្រើនពាន់នាក់បានស្លាប់នៅតាមដងផ្លូវ ចាប់តាំងពីពេលដែលខ្មែរក្រហមបានស្នើរឱ្យពួកគេចេញពីក្រុងភ្នំពេញ។ ជនភៀសខ្លួនបានចង្អុលបង្ហាញថាក្រុមភាគច្រើនជនជាតិចិន និង វៀតណាមដែលបានស្នាក់នៅកម្ពុជាគឺពួកដឹកនាំដើម្បីសាយហ្គន។
