There was an assumption that the United States was responsible for ousting Sihanouk in 1970, and thus precipitating the chaos that led to large scale destruction of the country. By 1969, it had become clear that great parts of Cambodia were being used by North Vietnamese to stage their war against Vietnam.
នេះជាការសន្មត់ថា សហរដ្ឋអាមេរិកត្រូវមានទំនួលខុសត្រូវមានទំនួលខុសត្រូវលើរឿងទម្លាក់ស៊ីហនុចុះចេញពីអំណាចក្នុងឆ្នាំ១៩៧០ និង នាំឱ្យមានភាពរឹងមាំវរដែលនាំអោយមានការបំផ្លិចបំផ្លាញទ្រង់ទ្រាយធំនៃប្រទេស។ នៅឆ្នាំ ១៩៦៩ វាបានបព្ជាក់ច្បាស់ការថាវាជាផ្នែកមួយដ៏សំខាន់នៃប្រទេសកម្ពុជា ដែលត្រូវបានប្រើប្រាស់ដោយវៀតណាមខាងជើង ដើម្បីសង្គ្រាមប្រឆាំងនឹងវៀតណាម។
