Main Crime Details :

During the harvesting month (November) of late 1978, two commune security men came to arrest me at ten p.m. while I was sleeping. One was named Pech and lives in Neaksen Village, Sann Kor Commune, Kampong Svay District; the name of the other I cannot recall. The two commune security men arrested, handcuffed, and imprisoned me in a security center which was located in Srangae Pagoda, Tbeng Village, Tbeng Commune, Kampong Svay District. I was imprisoned for half a month because Comrade Kuot, the security center chief, accused me of abducting a woman and escaping to Thailand with her. He was about to kill me.
However, the truth was that I did not know anything about this charge. When I was arrested, the two security men took me out of my house, tied me up tightly with a hammock string, and used a bicycle to take me to the security center. For the first three days, Kuot, the security center chief, interrogated me. After the interrogation, they conducted an investigation in each unit of the cooperative. As a result, they discovered that I had no intention of escaping to Thailand. Half a month later, I was released. Almost every day during my imprisonment, the security center chief ordered me to transport and bury the dead bodies which the security men had killed next to the prison. The number of people detained in the prison was about fifty or sixty, most of whom were city dwellers (the 17 April people), and the base people, consisting of male, youth, and elderly people. In the prison, I witnessed Comrade Kuot order his subordinates, four to five commune militiamen, to torture the prisoners. The torture consisted of beating the heads of prisoners with a stick and hoe, and shackling. Frequently, during the night, two or three security men who wore Pret Kaing shoes, (shoes which had nails on their soles), kicked prisoners all over their bodies until they died. Each kick could break the prisoner’s backbone or their head. The prisoners who were kicked died the following morning. When I carried the dead bodies to be buried next to the wall of Srange Pagoda, I realized that most of the dead prisoners had been beaten to death. I am not certain what these prisoners were accused of or why they were killed. During my detention, I was not tortured or mistreated at all. During the five days before I was about to be released, Comrade Kuot ordered me to bring rice soup to prisoners who received two meals per day, morning and evening. One can of rice served seven or ten people. There was salt in the rice soup as well. I do not know which upper level cadre gave the orders. During my detention, I was not fearful because it seemed like I became accustomed to seeing the security men, mistreatment of prisoners, and killing. I did not expect the security guards to release me. I assumed that I would be killed like the others had been. |
