From 1976 on, the Khmer Rouge forced me to do farming at Veal Kraom in Santuk District. At the time, I received orders from Ta Say, who is deceased. He ordered me to plow ten hectares of paddy fields per morning, using ten plows. If I was unable to complete this task, they would punish me by decreasing my rations. Additionally, they made me transplant rice seedlings during the rainy season and harvest the paddy fields during the dry season. They allowed me to take only an hour off for a short lunch break, then put me to work until nighttime. They also put me to work uprooting trees and hauling the timber in order to build a school. I was assigned to provide four logs per day. |

From 1976 to 1979, Ta Say ordered me to work outside the village. I could visit and stay at my home for only one or two nights, before returning to my work site. Therefore, I had no chance to spend time with my family. My family was assigned to weave silk and grow silkworms in the village. I went to work outside the village until the end of the Pol Pot regime. They told me not to worry about my family, because there were people looking after them. Food rations in my village were not terrible because the village chief said that we were base people. However, we lacked personal freedom because Angkar constantly spied on us. |
