Death of my father, Lok Sann:

In approximately 1978, my father, Lok Sann, was executed by the Khmer Rouge in Po Phlouk Village, Sam Proch Commune, Stong District , Kampong Thom Province. I learned of this incident from my mother. The communal security police who came to arrest my father were Hap, Ann, and Poul. At that time, my father was accused of stealing potatoes. However, the truth was that he went fishing with the hope of catching a few fish to eat because he was suffering from starvation.

I think they disliked my father because he was a new person. My mother was present to witness my father being arrested. Lauy Phan, a neighbor, also witnessed the incident. They arrested him, took him to the security center, and ordered him to carry water. My mother witnessed this incident. The security center was next to my mother’s house, and she heard my father scream when he was tortured. When he carried water, my mother saw that his face was swollen and burned by the torchlight.

Five or six days later, my father died. His body was covered by sugar palm leaves in the security center. At that time, my mother was working far away at her worksite, and she did not witness the incident. Village people informed her that the Khmer Rouge had tied my father’s body with a rope and pulled him into a pit.

Mistreatment:

In approximately 1978, I was beaten and deprived of food. Siem (deceased), the cooperative chief, beat me with a buffalo whip because the buffalo I was tending had broken loose from their tether. I could not catch the buffalo because I lacked strength due to starvation. My body was swollen because I was malnourished. At that time, I was given only a spoonful of rice gruel and I could not mix the gruel with anything else. If they saw me do that, they would throw the gruel away. There was a lot of rice, but they did not feed us enough because they wanted us to die. Siem, the cooperative chief, was in charge of the place. At that time, I lived in Po Plouk Village, Sam Proch Commune, Stong District, Kampong Thom Province. Malnutrition occurred everywhere in the village. No one saw me being beaten with the buffalo whip.
