My property, consisting of ten cattle, an ox-cart, a bike, one hectare of paddy field, and a house, was taken away and put to use collectively by the Khmer Rouge. No private ownership was allowed. Pheat, the commune chief, along with his security police, came to confiscate my property. The incident took place in 1975 in Rumchek Village, Rumany Commune, Rovieng District, but the date is unknown. The reason was also unknown. |

Religious persecution
In the village, there was one pagoda named Prey Torting, which was destroyed by the Khmer Rouge in 1976. Then the Khmer Rouge took the pagoda pillars and used them to make a bridge. Buddha statues were smashed, and all monks were disrobed. This incident took place in Rumchek Village, Rumany Commune, Rovieng District. Pheat, the commune chief, and his security police ordered the destruction of the pagoda because the Khmer Rouge wanted to eliminate religious practice. Starvation During the Khmer Rouge regime, there was insufficient food to eat in my village, and the work was extremely demanding. The food supplies were most insufficient during 1977 and 1978. During the worst of the starvation, there was only one bowl of rice soup to eat at a meal. Because they were starving, people tried to find anything to satisfy their stomach. Eating such a variety of unhealthy things caused them to become ill with diseases, such as swollen disease and diarrhea, until they died. This incident took place in Rumchek Village, Rumany Commune. I do not recall the names of the people who died. Village, commune, and district chiefs starved people. We do not know why they did such a thing. |
