Starvation and forced labor
Beginning in 1976, the Khmer Rouge starved me. They gave me only rice soup mixed with vegetables, including papaya, bamboo shoots, and banana, mixed up together. The Khmer Rouge gave us two meals per day, lunch and dinner. We were provided only one bowl at each of these meals. At that time, they put me to work at a construction site of Dike 109, located in Sammaky Commune (during the Khmer Rouge regime), Rikreay Commune (current regime), Rovieng District, Kampong Thom Province (during the Khmer Rouge), now located in Preah Vihear Province. The Khmer Rouge put me to work there carrying earth and building dikes. During the regime, I was about eighteen or nineteen years old. The Khmer Rouge forced me to work all day without relief, until approximately ten p.m. or midnight, before going to bed. Since I was young, I did not know the name of the chief of the construction site. I was almost killed because I stole some sugar. About the time of the 1978 harvest season, I was taken for re-education (a meeting for criticizing group members), because the Khmer Rouge found out that I had stolen sugar. The Khmer Rouge took me for re-education, because Kol (deceased), the unit chief, reported the incident to the upper level, Pum, the construction site chief. After being taken for re-education two times, I dared not steal anything more, fearing that the Khmer Rouge would execute me. I stole the sugar because I was starving. The Khmer Rouge relocated me to Mong Russei District, Battambang Province. |

Confiscation of property:
The Khmer Rouge confiscated my cattle, including them in the collective property, and my house was used as a rice storehouse. Evacuation and family separation: In 1976, the Khmer Rouge evacuated my parents and siblings to Chamlorng Village, Sammaky (during the Khmer Rouge regime) District, Rovieng District, Preah Vihear Province. They relocated me to another village of that commune. |
