Following the violent suppression of a large peasant revolt in Battambang during the Spring of 1967, he disappeared and was presumed at the time to have been murdered by the police or the military (BK, CB, p. 108) ~ He dedicated his doctoral thesis to Sihanouk in 1959 (BK, CB, p. 16) ~ He belonged to the so-called "Paris Group" of students, which included Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan, Hou Youn, Hu Nim. The group returned to Cambodia after the anti-French resistance war ahd ended. Pol Pot was also a member, but returned before the war's conclusion (BK, CB, p. viii)
