During the 1960s Nuon Chea advocated "critical support for Sihanouk's policy of neutrality, his opposition to U.S. imperialism in the area and his covert material support for the National Liberation Front in South Vietnam" (BK, CB, p.ii) ~ He belonged to the so-called "Paris Group" of students, which included Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan, Hou Youn, Hu Nim. The group returned to Cambodia after the anti-French resistance war ahd ended. Pol Pot was also a member, but returned before the war's conclusion (BK, CB, p. viii)
