Main Crime Location
The loss of my father One evening in early 1977, a group of regional Khmer Rouge soldiers rode up on two motorbikes to the canal construction site, located in Svay Chrum of Svay Rieng district. They tied my father up, and put him on one of the motorbikes. His subordinate, Chhoeun (deceased), witnessed this incident, and later informed us about it. Under the regime, my father served as a chief of the Mean Chey district, which has been renamed the Svay Rieng district. The regional Khmer Rouge soldiers, who came to arrest my father, were unknown to me. My father was arrested, with the accusation that he was a traitor with leanings toward the Vietnamese. At the time my father was arrested, only my mother and I lived in Svay Chrum commune, Svay Chrum district, now known as Svay Rieng district. My siblings were relocated to Battambang province. At the age of 13, I heard that high-level [leaders of the Angkar] ordered my father’s arrest. I think the senior leaders are responsible for what happened to my father. After my father was arrested, I tried to seek news of him. At one point, a woman, whose name I cannot recall, told me that my father had been beaten off the motorbike, and died. She did not tell me exactly where, because she herself did not know the name of the place. However, she mentioned that my father was killed on the “west side. My father disappeared forever from the moment he was arrested. My mother and I believe he must have been killed, because during the regime people were killed when they were arrested. However, for some time, we both still had at least a little hope, that he might have survived, and might return to us. But now, we are certain, that he must have perished. Since 1979, there have been only my mother and me. We have suffered and struggled every day, since this time, because my father and my three siblings, evacuated to Battambang province, all perished.
