Summary / Abstract :
On July 14, 1978 Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ieng Sary and his team entered Thailand via the Poi Pet border pass to Aranyaprathet District of Prachinburi. They continued to B angkok. The Thai Foreign Minister, Upadit Pachariyangkun told the press after their two-day meeting that they agreed to the principles of friendly relations and non-interference. The two sides wanted to reactivate the Border Co-ordinating Offices at Poi Pet and Aranyaprathet. Ieng Sary conceded that the past border problems were caused by misunderstanding. They also agreed to exchange trade delega tions for state-to-state trade, technical and scientific information and to set up telegraphic communication. The Thai side also asked Cambodia to be flexible with the Thai trawlers who violate Cambod ia's maritime border. One July 15, Sary was granted an hour-long audience with King Bhumiphol. On July 16, the Thai Prime Minister General Kriangsak Chomanan said that Sary had delivered Pol Pot's inv itation to visit Cambodia to him, and he had already accepted it. On July 17, Sary showed the press a film about the fall of the Lon Nol regime, development during the Pol Pot period and a battle with Vietnam. He said Vietnam was trying to occupy Cambodia and wanted to establish Indochina Federation. Sary also rejected the accusation that his government had treated its people brutally.
